Cabin filter making AC smell bad?

Turned on the AC today and got this musty, almost moldy smell blasting through the vents. Happens mostly when I first start the car or switch to recirc. Changed the cabin filter about 2 years ago, probably time again? How do you know when it's really clogged or just needs replacing?

That classic damp smell is almost always a dirty cabin air filter- pollen, dust, leaves, and moisture build up, then bacteria/mold grow on it. If it's been 2 years or 30-40k km, especially with lots of city driving or humid weather, it's definitely due. I replace mine yearly now to avoid the stink. Last time I grabbed one from https://elartcom.eu/categories/cabin-air-filters-25 - they have a big selection sorted by car make, including activated carbon ones that trap odors better than basic paper. Picked a carbon filter for my Toyota, fit snug with the right airflow direction arrow. Smell gone after a day, AC blows fresh and clean again, even on recirc. No more headaches from funky air. Their category is handy- filter by model to get the exact size and type, prices decent too.
